Scope and Contents

Records cover all aspects of planning for exhibitions held at the museum. Includes information on lenders, installation plans, other venues, programs, previews, indemnification, budget, sponsorship, labels and wall text, shipping, publicity, research, checklists, catalogue, etc.

Exhibition files are kept by various other departments, including Director's Office, Registrar's Office, and the Exhibitions' Office. These files are transferred to the Archives when no longer actively used in-house. For more recent exhibitions, the archived Registrar's Office and Exhibitions' Office files are the most current.

Arrangement

Planning files for exhibitions held at the St. Louis Art Museum. Organized chronologically by date of exhibition. Under heading of exhibition, correspondence is chronologically arranged; other material arranged by subject.

Custodial History

Records generated by the office of the curatorial department responsible for the planning of individual exhibitions. The office responsible is dictated by the culture, subject or period represented in each exhibition. Transferred to the Museum Archives when each exhibition has ended and business transactions concerning extended tours have concluded.

Processing Information

Curatorial exhibition files were rehoused from record carton boxes to document case boxes by archivist Jenna Stout, September 2025-February 2026.
